Preregistration performance standards

QUESTION
Which of the following are inappropriate first aid procedures for a recently acquired blister burn on the palm of a hand?

  1. apply a sterile, non-adhesive dressing
  2. apply an antiseptic ointment
  3. use a sterile needle to burst the blister

 

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

As part of the preregistration year knowledge of first aid is required. The society recommend you to undertake official courses and obtain a certificate such as ones by the BritishRedCross or St Johns Ambulance. However it is not compulsory, for example boots do their own first aid training for their prereg students.

 

Here are some basic rules for first aid.

1.  Make sure that the surroundings are safe for yourself and the victim.

2.  Determine if the victim is awake

3.  Check airway’s, breathing, and circulation

4.  Call for help (ambulance)

 
 

First aid treatment of minor burns is as follows+

-         remove jewellery or any articles which may restrict blood flow

-         cool the affected are with running water for 15 minutes

-         do not apply any creams or ointments

-         blisters should not be burst due to risk of infection and scarring

-         cover with clingfilm or a clean, dry, non-fluffy cotton cloth,

-         take simple analgesic for pain relief
